When the sun shines !

We're only a third of the way through April and have had another Spring time weather breaking record in The Netherlands this past Saturday ! The 6th of April reached a high of 24.1 C ! The warmest since 1901. You know what that means? Wow! The hostas are growing  and few hosta buds have been spotted ! Even the moss is looking good !
Het Gazebo is looking for volunteers to join the
Weeding Wednesday team !
9:30 - 12:00
Do you want to try
 doing something garden/plant related
such as
hoeing, weeding, raking and maintaing paths
while meeting freindly Hosta folk once a week ?
There's coffee, tea,
and you will probably become a Hosta lover !
Wednesdays ! Give it a try !

Het Gazebo growing greener !

Trying to stay ahead of the fast growing weeds
are what the volunteers are trying to do !
Plus they worked hard on trying to control Hosta Clausa. It had to be thinned out due to its spreading habit , which it really does !

Description

(Mature Size: 19"T x 45"W) Spreading Habit,

  • Glossy dark green leaves are elliptical and slightly rippled.
  • Species form native to Korea that spreads and makes a great ground cover.
  • Spreads by a rhizomatous nature which makes the width of this hosta infinite.
  • Great hosta for colonizing an area that is hard to care for.
  • Fairly sun tolerant if grown in good fertile soil with good moisture retention.
  • In August this hosta produces a numerous amount of bright purple flower buds on tall scapes, that never open (clausa = closed).

Hostas really kick start the Spring feeling !
looking great !

New hostas planted !

This week at Het Gazebo !
There's a lot of work going into restoring the original absract leaf design plan that is Het Gazebo ! A selection of new hostas arrived and were sorted, aranged and planted in their new borders by the volunteers. It's the perfect time to plant hostas. The weather's warming up, it's still rather wet and quite mild for this time of year. The bright greens sure are looking good !

Het Gazebo on the first day of Spring ! 18 C

The Spring Equinox
But nature is showing signs of being 5 weeks ahead !
Everywhere you look around it's bursting in colour !
The early hostas at Het Gazebo can't wait any more !
They are up and growing !
Snails are out but they didn't do much damage yet !
With the warm weather the volunteers had a great morning
 Hoeing
is a fundamental agricultural practice
that involves the disruption of the soil surface
to manage weeds and enhance soil aeration

Spring time's busy at Het Gazaebo

Het Gazebo is growing !
One advantage of having a rather warm and wet start to the year means this newly planted red beech hedge has a great chance taking root ! There are more sightings of hosta shoots and fresh hosta leaves ! The volunteers have raked, gathered and removed all the fallen leaves and branches ! It was dry enough to have coffee at the dedicated picnic table that's there to welcome visitors this coming tourist / vacation season :) Things will grow quickly !

Wednesday, March 6, 2024

After a very foggy, code yellow, start to the day,the sun came out and it warmed up from 4 C to 11 C ! Spring is in the air ! The days are getting longer ! As you can see the pavement has been completed and the ground work is ready for a red beech hedge. The volunteers spent their morning raking leaves while finding the Spring geen of the first hostas.
